Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure designed to effectively treat and decrease the existence of varicose veins and spider veins. The treatment involves injecting the veins with a solution, usually a saline solution, directly into the spider or varicose vein. At Westover Hills Dermatology, located in San Antonio, TX, our experienced and qualified staff will be more than happy to answer any questions for you. Contact us today to schedule a consultation!
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
The lining of the blood vessel reacts to the injection, collapsing the vein, and creates small scar tissue, the scar tissue then fades from sight. The blood that used to be in the spider or varicose vein re-enters the bloodstream through larger, healthier veins. The collapsed vein is then reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades away.
Is Sclerotherapy Effective?
Sclerotherapy has an excellent overall success rate being that it is a fairly common procedure. In addition to improving the visibility of these veins, other benefits of the treatment may include: reduced aching, swelling, burning, and night cramps. If your level of treatment involves smaller spider veins or varicose veins, definitive and remarkable results can typically be visible anywhere from three to six weeks. Larger veins may continue to be visible, though on a less prominent basis, for up to three or four months.
How Many Treatments Do I Need?
Depending on the vein, multiple treatments may help to obtain ideal results. Once veins respond to sclerotherapy treatment, they rarely come back. But if you are prone to getting spider or varicose veins, you may develop new veins in different areas, which will require additional treatments. As a general practice advisory, most clients should wait about six weeks between their sclerotherapy sessions.
