Acne in San Antonio, TX

Acne is one of the most common skin concerns in the United States, affecting around 60 million people each year. While some individuals experience mild breakouts that respond well to consistent at-home care, others deal with persistent or severe forms, such as cystic acne, fungal acne, or hormonal acne, which can lead to long-term scarring and skin discoloration. Acne typically appears on the face, chest, and back and is caused by a combination of clogged pores, excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Although it often begins during adolescence, many adults continue to experience acne well into their 40s. A member of our team at Westover Hills Dermatology in San Antonio, TX can evaluate your skin and recommend an effective acne treatment plan designed to help you achieve clearer, healthier skin.

Over-the-counter products often fall short in treating moderate to severe types of acne, especially when dealing with more stubborn forms, like cystic acne or hormonal acne. At Westover Hills Dermatology, our team offers a wide range of professional treatments that may include topical prescriptions formulated with retinoids, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur to help reduce breakouts and inflammation. For more advanced cases, oral antibiotics like doxycycline, minocycline, or tetracycline may be used to address deeper bacterial causes. In-office procedures, such as laser therapy, can penetrate beneath the skin's surface to target acne-causing bacteria and reduce pigmentation issues. Chemical peels and professional extractions are also available to remove pore blockages and improve skin clarity. Each acne treatment approach is customized to your skin's specific condition and the type of acne present.

The symptoms of acne vary, depending on its severity and the type of acne involved. While physical blemishes are the most visible signs, acne can also have emotional effects. Common symptoms include:

  • Whiteheads
  • Blackheads
  • Papules (small red bumps)
  • Pustules (inflamed, pus-filled blemishes)
  • Nodules (painful, firm lumps under the skin)
  • Cysts (deep, inflamed lesions associated with cystic acne)
  • Dark marks or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Acne scars that remain after breakouts heal
  • Emotional effects, such as low self-esteem or depression

I didn’t know how else to get in touch with Dr. Opeola to thank her other than a review. I saw her in 2017, while she was at Derm SA (I’ve had terrible experiences with Derm SA after she left so I’ve since stop giving business to them). I saw her about 2 months before my wedding day. I had spent years trying to control my adult acne that started my first year of college. Spent hundreds of dollars on products trying to find something that worked for me. Nothing did until I saw Dr. Opeola and she prescribed me medication that cleared my skin FAST and has kept it clear the last 2 and a half years. She was caring and understood that I wanted clear skin for my wedding day, as well as clear skin for my job as a school teacher (I look young enough, acne only made me look even more like a teenager). I wish I could still see her but she moved and I moved and it’s just not possible. But she helped me get some confidence back and if she’s as any where as caring as she was a couple years ago, she’s definitely worth it!

The Dermatologist [Dr Opeola or Dr O] and the Nurse Practitioner [Ike] have in-depth knowledge of skin problems. I have had ongoing acne breakouts and spotty blemishes since 12 yrs old and now 67. Since Sept '18 as a patient, my skin is so radiant, smooth, and the acne has been kept under control. I don't need to wear a make-up foundation to cover dark spots anymore. Based on individual issues of patients, Dr. O decides on the best approach. She takes care of skin rashes, biopsies, hair removal (or laser), certain surgeries, and other services. Please look at her website or call the office in order to inquire about what services are available and what healthcare is accepted. Tricare and Medicare is also accepted. She does what she can to advise what is best in order to save you money. One point that needs to be mentioned -- you may need to wait up to 45 minutes beyond your appt time because of her quality care and increase of patients but it is well worth it. One more important fact -- I call her the 'Hollywood' Dermatologist.

I have been to a few different dermatologists and Dr Opeola is by far the best. I came for acne and she has helped me clear my skin for the first time in years. She really works with you on your preferences to achieve your skin goals. The staff is also very friendly.

I had a cyst on my face that needed an operation and it looks like I never had one. Dr. Opeola and her team are not only precise they are the top of the class and do everything with a kind heart. You have to have the money but if you do you are in great hands. Recommending my son with bad acne to go to them.
