Cryosurgery in San Antonio, TX

Cryosurgery is a noninvasive treatment that uses extreme cold to destroy abnormal or unwanted skin tissue. At Westover Hills Dermatology in San Antonio, TX, our team uses cryosurgery to treat a variety of skin concerns, including precancerous lesions like actinic keratosis, early-stage skin cancers, and benign growths, such as warts and skin tags. Cryosurgery is often a quick, in-office procedure with little to no downtime, making it a convenient option for many patients. Whether you're seeking cryosurgery for skin cancer or for wart removal, we will determine if this method is appropriate for your needs during a personalized consultation.

When cryosurgery is used to treat skin lesions, we begin by cleansing the treatment area. A numbing agent may be applied to minimize any discomfort. We then apply liquid nitrogen to the lesion using a spray or cotton swab. The extreme cold freezes the targeted cells, causing them to die and gradually shed over time. Our team applies the cryosurgery treatment precisely, making sure only the affected area is treated while preserving surrounding healthy skin. After the procedure, we will provide instructions for care after cryosurgery to support proper healing and reduce the risk of infection.

Cryosurgery offers several advantages for treating both cosmetic and medical skin concerns, such as:

  • Minimally invasive with little to no scarring
  • Quick treatment time and minimal recovery
  • Effective for precancerous cells and early-stage skin cancer
  • Lower cost compared to other surgical treatments
  • Can be safely used for various types of skin growths

Cryosurgery is a treatment option for removing unwanted skin growths, such as skin tags or moles, to enhance appearance or address irritation caused by jewelry or clothing. This procedure is particularly useful for growths in visible areas, like the face, or locations prone to discomfort, such as the chest. Additionally, cryosurgery is commonly used to treat actinic keratosis (a precancerous condition) or certain types of skin cancer, including basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, on the outer layers of the skin. It can be performed on its own or combined with other skin cancer treatments for improved results.

How much does cryosurgery cost?

The cost of cryosurgery can vary depending on the size and number of areas treated, as well as whether it’s performed for cosmetic or medical reasons. If cryosurgery is used to treat skin cancer or precancerous lesions, insurance may cover part or all of the procedure. Our friendly staff can review your coverage and provide an estimate before treatment.

Is cryosurgery painful?

Most patients tolerate cryosurgery well, experiencing only mild discomfort or a short burning sensation. The treated area may blister or scab afterward, which is a normal part of the recovery process. Our team at Westover Hills Dermatology provides clear aftercare instructions to help your skin recover comfortably and reduce any irritation.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Cryosurgery is generally safe, but like any medical procedure, it carries some minor risks. Temporary redness, swelling, or changes in skin tone may occur. Rarely, there may be blistering or mild scarring. The dermatologists at Westover Hills Dermatology will discuss your medical history to minimize any potential complications.

After your cryosurgery, you’ll usually be able to leave our office right away and return to most of your normal activities. It’s common for the treated skin to appear red or swollen, and a blister may form as part of the healing process. Dr. Opeola will review how to properly wash and care for the area to help prevent infection. We typically recommend gently cleansing the skin 3–4 times daily until a dry crust or scab develops. In some cases, you may be asked to return to Westover Hills Dermatology so Dr. Opeola can evaluate your recovery and determine if another treatment is needed.
