Psoriasis in San Antonio, TX

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that occurs when skin cells reproduce faster than normal, resulting in patches of dry, thickened, and inflamed skin. This overproduction leads to the buildup of scaly lesions, known as plaques, that can appear anywhere on the body. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type and often affects the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back, and hands. Many individuals also experience scalp psoriasis, which can cause flaking and crusting similar to dandruff but with more pronounced irritation. While some cases are mild, others require ongoing care to reduce flare-ups and discomfort. Psoriasis is not contagious, but it can significantly affect daily comfort and confidence. At Westover Hills Dermatology in San Antonio, TX, our team provides personalized care to help patients manage their condition and improve skin health.

There is currently no cure for psoriasis, but several treatments can help control symptoms and improve quality of life. The right psoriasis treatment depends on the type and severity of the condition. Mild cases may respond well to prescription-strength creams, ointments, or moisturizers that reduce scaling and inflammation. When the scalp is involved, medicated shampoos, sprays, and topical oils may be used to reduce buildup and irritation. For more persistent or widespread symptoms, oral or injectable medications may be prescribed to address inflammation throughout the body. Phototherapy, a treatment that uses controlled exposure to ultraviolet light, is another effective option for many people. Laser therapies have also advanced in recent years, offering more precise targeting of plaques with minimal damage to surrounding skin.

Recognizing psoriasis symptoms early can lead to better long-term management. Signs often include:

  • Red or pink raised patches of skin covered in thick, silvery scales
  • Symmetrical plaques on both sides of the body (such as both knees or elbows)
  • Itchy or burning sensations before or during flare-ups
  • Thickened, crusty areas on the scalp
  • Skin cracking or bleeding, especially after scratching
  • Irritation in skin folds, including under the breasts or buttocks
  • Tiny pinpoint bleeding when scales are removed (known as Auspitz's sign)

Distinguishing psoriasis and eczema is important, as treatments and triggers may differ. Our team can help confirm the diagnosis and explain the best course of care.

Yessss I am much better - I am black, dx is psoriasis and seen by a dermatologist. It was spreading with the treatment I was given. My husband saw Dr O, different problem, with a great outcome. I got a referral to see her and my psoriasis is almost gone. I referred someone else of color to Dr Opeola, for similar issue. It is cleared up now. She knows what she is doing and has excellent staff working for her. I highly recommend her regardless of your color.
