Rashes in San Antonio, TX

A rash refers to any area of skin that becomes irritated, inflamed, or discolored. While some rashes are mild and short-lived, others may signal an underlying infection or allergic reaction. Common causes include bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or contact with irritants, like poison ivy or harsh skin care products. Heat rash, contact dermatitis, shingles rash, and athlete's foot are all considered forms of skin rashes. Some types are contagious, especially if left untreated, while others are not. If you notice persistent irritation or itchy blotches on the skin, the team at Westover Hills Dermatology in San Antonio, TX can evaluate your condition and recommend an appropriate course of care for long-term relief.

Because rashes vary in cause, appearance, and severity, no single treatment works for everyone. During your visit, a member of our team will examine the affected area to determine what's triggering the reaction. Diagnosis may be based on visual appearance, symptom history, or further testing if needed. Once we understand the underlying issue, we will develop a skin rash treatment plan that addresses both the cause and symptoms. Treatments may include topical creams or gels with antifungal, antibacterial, or steroid ingredients. In some cases, oral medications may also be prescribed. Our goal is to relieve discomfort quickly and help prevent future flare-ups by identifying the root of the issue.

Rashes present differently, depending on the cause. Some are mild while others can be more disruptive or painful. Common signs include:

  • Redness or patches of irritated skin
  • Itching or burning sensations
  • Raised bumps or hives
  • Scaly or dry patches
  • Blisters or oozing sores
  • Pain, tingling, or stinging
  • Itchy blotches on the skin that may spread or become inflamed

These symptoms may appear in isolated areas or across large portions of the body. Identifying the type of rash, whether it's poison ivy, heat rash, or a shingles rash, is essential to finding the right treatment approach.

The Dermatologist [Dr Opeola or Dr O] and the Nurse Practitioner [Ike] have in-depth knowledge of skin problems. I have had ongoing acne breakouts and spotty blemishes since 12 yrs old and now 67. Since Sept '18 as a patient, my skin is so radiant, smooth, and the acne has been kept under control. I don't need to wear a make-up foundation to cover dark spots anymore. Based on individual issues of patients, Dr. O decides on the best approach. She takes care of skin rashes, biopsies, hair removal (or laser), certain surgeries, and other services. Please look at her website or call the office in order to inquire about what services are available and what healthcare is accepted. Tricare and Medicare is also accepted. She does what she can to advise what is best in order to save you money. One point that needs to be mentioned -- you may need to wait up to 45 minutes beyond your appt time because of her quality care and increase of patients but it is well worth it. One more important fact -- I call her the 'Hollywood' Dermatologist.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would!Firstly, I would like to note that when it came to medicinal issues, I favored the Homeopathic approach over the Allopathic one. I had been successful with "self-treatment' in the past; but, that was not so with this case. When I first made the acquaintance with the doctors at my first appointment, I was itching all over and had rashes :-( I also brought digital pictures detailing how I initially attempted to resolve the problem. They reviewed my issue and then prescribed external and internal medicines to address it. Although I was more than open to a topical solution, I had some reservations that centered around the ingesting of medication. I had no doubt that they were concerned about my situation; and (unlike other doctors), actually wanted to help me. It was the Pharmaceutical Companies (aka "Big Pharma") that I had some concerns with (after seeing documentaries on Netflix and CBS' "60 Minutes" LOL ). What I greatly appreciated was the empathy. They actually listened. She wanted to make sure that I was comfortable with the treatment - showing a really great bedside manner :-) I eventually agreed to the use of medicine; and, I am so glad I did! After about 2 weeks, my remaining symptoms had vanished and I was healing.I have been to THREE DERMATOLOGISTS in the past who had little time for me beyond telling me "I don't know" or prescribing an uber-expensive drug (advertised in the main-stream media) for my treatment (after reviewing my case for a total of three minutes). For the first time in MANY, MANY years, I have found excellent doctors who are highly knowledgeable, compassionate and ~really~ care for the well-being of their patients. I told the AP that they are helping me to re-consider the virtues of Allopathic medicine again.
