We can choose to utilize a variety of methods to heal the imperfections on our faces, but there’s nothing that heals the body better than itself. This is the theory behind microneedling. By creating hundreds of “micro fractures” across the face, the body kicks into gear its healing processes to create smoother, clearer skin.
Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment which has been used to help correct the skin’s imperfections for years. Westover Hills Dermatology is proud to offer this innovative treatment. Call our offices today and schedule your initial consultation.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is a safe and simple process which involves a handheld device called a dermaroller. The dermaroller is covered in very tiny needles which are strategically rolled across the face. The needles create hundreds of tiny punctures on the dermis to boost the body’s healing ability. The result is the additional flow of blood to the treated area. This blood carries with it hemoglobin, which boosts the production of collagen, which results in smoother skin.
The needles on the dermaroller are long enough to create the microwound on the skin but thin enough for you to feel only minimal amounts of pain.
Does it Hurt?
Due to the thinness of the needles, the pain experienced during treatment is easily managed. Most patients describe the feeling of microneedling as having pressure applied to the face, with the potential of stinging afterward. For added comfort, we will apply a topical numbing cream to your face before we start the procedure. There is no need to use general or local anesthesia.
There may be some pain felt after the appointment as the numbing cream begins to wear off. Additional side effects may be some redness and swelling in the treated area, sensitivity to the touch, and tenderness for the next couple days.
What Does Microneedling Help Treat?
Microneedling is a good answer for a variety of skin issues. Some of the most popular uses for microneedling are:
- Wrinkles
- Fine lines
- Uneven skin
- Acne scars
- And more
Producing new collagen is essential for the skin’s ability to look young and smooth. As we get older, our skin loses this precious material. By creating additional collagen, the skin automatically corrects the myriad issues created by collagen loss, making microneedling one of the most versatile treatments available.
