How Long Do the Effects of Microdermabrasion Last?

Skin health and appearance affect your self-image, self-confidence, and your general health, so it’s important that you have the best skin possible. Fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and pigmentation can mar your skin over the years. Doctor Opeola at Westover Hills Dermatology in San Antonio, Texas offers a wide variety of treatments dedicated to restoring skin health. One of our most popular and effective treatments is microdermabrasion.

What Is Microdermabrasion?

This is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment that helps rejuvenate the skin. This process renews the skin’s tone and texture and can minimize the appearance of a wide variety of problems your skin may experience. This cosmetic treatment can transform your skin quickly, safely, and painlessly.

How Does It Work?

During this treatment, a trained professional will spray tiny crystalline particles onto the skin, which will gently exfoliate the outer layer of the skin. They essentially sand the skin, an exfoliating process that removes any dead and loose outer layers of skin. This exfoliation speeds up the skin’s process and can result in skin with more collagen and elastin.

This increased production of collagen and elastin will result in rejuvenated skin that is bright, radiant, more even in tone, soft, and healthy. This treatment is relatively quick and will generally take just thirty minutes or less. It’s minimally invasive and can be performed at our office.

How Long Do the Effects of Microdermabrasions Last?

The longevity of the effects of this treatment is dependent on performing proper skincare. Because your skin is constantly regenerating itself and the effects of this treatment are cumulative, you may initially need to have several treatment sessions scheduled seven to fourteen days apart. After this initial period, you may want to have another treatment every few months to maintain and further improve your skin’s appearance.

Extending Your Effects

After receiving your treatment, clean your face gently with a wet cloth to remove any remaining dead skin cells. Make sure to moisturize your skin and use sunscreen if you go outside. Try to stay out of the sun because its UV rays may damage your skin.

Drink water to stay hydrated and avoid scratching the area that received treatment. Be sure to avoid harsh chemicals, tanning, waxing, depilatory creams, and laser procedures.

What Are Some Effects of Microdermabrasion?

Wrinkles and Fine Lines

This treatment can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. When you’re younger, your skin naturally has more collagen and elastin, which gives your skin its texture, shape, volume, elasticity, and resilience.

However, as you grow older, your body will produce less collagen and elastin, which weakens the skin and can result in sagging, stretching, or the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Having an increased presence of collagen and elastin in your body can help reverse signs of your skin’s aging.

As a result of the exfoliation process, the body’s defense mechanisms are triggered, which encourages cellular renewal, skin growth, and increased production of collagen and elastin.

Acne and Acne Scarring

Microdermabrasion can also greatly reduce the appearance of acne and acne scarring through exfoliating the skin. After exfoliation, new skin with more collagen and elastin will develop. This new skin will be more even in tone, smoother, and healthier, which will help reduce the appearance of acne and acne scarring.

Stretch Marks

Microdermabrasion can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks, similar to the way it is effective in reducing the appearance of acne and acne scarring. The new collagen-rich and elastin-rich skin that replaces the older, more damaged skin will be more evenly toned, which will help reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Enlarged Pores

Enlarged pores are often caused by blockages from excessive sebum, dirt, or dead skin cells. This treatment removes the outer layer of skin, immediately clearing many pores of sebum, dirt, and dead skin cells, which allows the pores to return to their normal size.

Another common cause of enlarged pores is a decrease in elasticity in the skin surrounding the pore. The process encourages new skin with increased collagen and elastin levels, which will help reduce the enlarged pores that were caused by a lack of elasticity in the skin.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation creates darker patches of skin, like age spots or melasma, because the skin produces more melanin. This can be caused by sun exposure, injuries, acne vulgaris, and inflammation.

Microdermabrasion exfoliates the skin, leaving skin that is more even in tone, which will reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Skin Texture

After receiving this exfoliating treatment, you’ll no longer be stuck with your old, dull, uneven skin. Your new skin will be radiant, glowing, smooth, and fresh. You’ll look and feel better and healthier!

This cosmetic treatment does not have any downtime, which makes it a very convenient option for treating your skin. After receiving a treatment, you can continue your day as usual as there will likely be no postoperative issues.
