Interested in Scar Removal? Learn About Z-Plasty

In many instances, when a wound or injury heals, it results in a scar. The appearance of the scar can often be improved through scar revision surgery by making the scar appear less visible. If the movement of the skin is restricted due to the tightness of the scar, there is a technique used called the Z-Plasty. This scar removal technique can improve the cosmetic appearance and functionality of the scar. Contracted scars can be elongated or rotated to relieve the tension.

It is important to consult with the surgeon prior to the procedure to ensure all your questions regarding the surgery have been answered. It is important to bring a list of all medications you are taking including supplements and herbs. In most cases, individuals can return home the day of the surgery.

The Z-Plasty Procedure

Anesthesia will be provided to ensure you do not feel any discomfort during the procedure. You can discuss the available options with the team well beforehand. Pointed skin flaps are created to lessen the tightness of the skin and break up the scar. The surgeon ensure the flaps are placed correctly before closing the treated area.

It is important to follow the instructions the surgeon will give you for your recovery from scar removal. Any medications you have been given must be taken as prescribed. Unless the team instructs you to change or remove your bandage, it must remain in place. Avoid getting the bandage dirty or wet. Until you receive a green light from the surgeon, avoid anything that can cause your treatment area to be submerged or covered in water.

You should avoid any movements or exercises causing the skin in the area to stretch. The doctor can tell you which movements you need to avoid while you are recovering. The area should not be exposed to the sun until the surgeon tells you it is safe to use sunscreen.
