Cancer Treatments We Offer

In cryosurgery, the doctor will use liquid nitrogen to remove precancerous and cancerous growths. It can sometimes be combined with curettage and used as an alternative to excision.
Curettage and electrodessication, also known as C&D, can be used to treat precancerous growths and small cancers. It has two steps. During the first step, the surgeon will scrape away the visible part of the cancer. In the second step, they will use an electric needle to destroy any remaining cancer cells.
Excisional surgery can be used on many types of skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The surgeon will cut out or excise the cancer. If the doctor believes the patient needs further treatment, they will refer them to a specialist.
In topical chemotherapy, the doctor will treat the patient with a skin cream or ointment.
What Are Keloids?
Keloids are a type of raised scar that grows over time and can gradually become larger than the original injury. They are notoriously difficult to treat, for they can come back. Keloids are particularly apt to develop on the ears, shoulders, back, and chest. While they can affect anybody, they are particularly common on people with dark skin.
Westover Hills Dermatology offers several possible treatments for keloids. The dermatologist will recommend one based on the size and location of the keloid and the age of the patient. In most cases, the doctor will use a corticosteroid injection that will both relieve any burning and itching and gradually shrink the keloid. Most patients will need three or four injections with a month between each injection.
In some cases, the doctor may recommend surgically removing the keloid, either through conventional means or laser surgery. The patient can be given a local anesthetic. The doctor will closely monitor the treatment area to ensure that the keloid does not return.
Laser skin resurfacing is the final treatment option. The patient will typically need several treatments to make their keloid less and less visible.
