What is a Cyst?

A cyst is a round pocket of tissue that can form nearly anywhere on the body or skin. The pocket of tissue forming the cyst will often resemble a sac. It is also common for the pocket to contain liquid, air or another substance.

Most of these blemishes are found while examining the body. If the cyst is above the skin, then you will be able to see a bump on your body. It is also common to find one by feeling a lump developing under the skin. While it can be very scary to find a strange lump on your body, almost all cysts are benign. This makes them very different from a tumor. It is also possible that you may develop one on an untouchable part of the body. Most of these hidden ones form on the ovaries or kidneys.

There is not much you can do to prevent the formation of a cyst. Inflammation, infection and a blockage in the ducts are the most common causes. They will usually start out small and get bigger as the pocket of tissue starts to contain more fluid or air. It generally will not cause any painful symptoms unless it becomes infected, gets very large or grows on a sensitive area.

Most of these blemishes will not go away on their own, so they require some form of professional treatment in order to drain them. It may be tempting to try to squeeze out the fluid, but this will only cause an infection. That is why it is so important to have your condition treated by a qualified and skilled professional.

If your cyst starts to cause pain or turns a shade of red, then you need to get it treated by a medical professional. These are common signs of an infection in the area.

There are no long-term complications associated with cysts. The lump will go away immediately after the pocket is drained or surgically removed. While it is possible for a cyst to redevelop in the same area, it will be much easier to diagnose and treat than the first one.
